From Thaler to Dollar

dollar

The "Dollar" originated in the city of Joachimsthal in Bavaria (now Germany). Beginning in 1518, silver from the mines near Joachimsthal was minted into silver "thalers", with a standardized weight of 29.2 grams. ("Thal" means "valley" in German.)

Eventually, governments throughout Europe adopted this standardized coin for commerce. The silver came from many locations, and many different governments produced the coins, but they were all basically identical. Europe was on a "Dollar standard"...

Japan Mint to issue memorial coin in honor of samurai Ryoma Sakamoto

coinsThe Japan Mint has announced it will issue a memorial silver coin embossed with an image of legendary 19th-century samurai Ryoma Sakamoto.

The administrative agency has been issuing coins representing prefectures since 2008, in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the enforcement of the Local Autonomy Law.

The new 1,000-yen coin is themed on Kochi Prefecture, the birthplace of Sakamoto, a samurai who led the movement to overthrow the Tokugawa Shogunate and made a great contribution to the modernization of Japan. He has been featured in many films and TV dramas, including NHK's ongoing period drama "Ryomaden."

Moravia celebrates Fillmore coin release

coinsWith close to 1,000 witnesses watching, a young Millard Fillmore impersonator and his equally sprite make-believe wife Abigail poured from a wooden bucket a stream of coins bearing the face of the 13th president and Moravia native.

The United States Mint Thursday released its 13th presidential dollar coin, honoring Millard

Fillmore, at a ceremony in the Moravia Junior Senior School cafeteria, which was not large enough to accommodate the crowd of community members who had come to celebrate a president whose national legacy is not legendary, but whose roots are their roots.

First, a little background info on the Morgan silver dollar…

The Morgan silver dollar is today one of the most popular of all collector coins. First minted in 1878 following the passage of the Bland-Alison Act, the new dollar was named after its designer, George T. Morgan. Political pressure by powerful silver mining companies, in a gambit to stabilize the price of their commodity at artificially high levels, created the impetus driving the legislative action.

Hallaton Roman coin is 'oldest found in Britain'

coinsA silver coin dug up as part of a hoard is the oldest piece of Roman money found in Britain, experts believe.

The coin, which has been dated to 221BC, was found near Hallaton in Leicestershire with 5,000 other coins, a helmet and decorated bowl.

Uncovered by archaeologists in 2000, the coin's significance has just been recognised, the county council said.

It said the coin, which has the Goddess Roma on one side, was "something very special".

The other side depicts mythical twins Castor and Pollux sat on galloping horses.

Gold rush falls short on 30-year investment

Investors who paid US$850 ($1174) an ounce back then earned 44 per cent as gold reached a year high of $1226.56 on December 3 in London.

The Standard & Poor's 500 stock index produced a 22-fold return with dividends reinvested, Treasuries rose 11-fold and cash in the average US cheque account rose at least 92 per cent. On an inflation-adjusted basis, gold investors are still 79 per cent away from getting their money back.

Gobrecht book new from Heritage

coinsHeritage Auction Galleries and Ivy Press announced Dec. 1 the release of the 136-page book Gobrecht Dollars. It is the most thorough review to date of the existing scholarship on these controversial and much sought-after coins, according to Heritage.

“This reference book, the result of five and a half years of work, is intended for the general numismatist that is looking for a deeper understanding of these fascinating coins,” said Mark Van Winkle, editor of the tome and chief cataloger at Heritage. “It gathers together the diverse threads of the Gobrecht story without delving into the more speculative areas of die markers and their possible consequence for establishing emission sequences.”

The overriding question of emission sequences is an area that is, and has been, under investigation for some time and, it is reasoned, will eventually lead to a generally accepted striking order.

Risky Pudding: UK Diners Sign Waiver for Dessert

news

A London restaurant has asked diners to sign away their right to sue before consuming Christmas pudding, a traditional Yuletide treat that sometimes contains coins or charms.

Neleen Strauss, the owner of High Timber in central London, acknowledged that the idea was a bit silly but she said she would rather be safe than sorry.

''It has created a bit of a stir in the restaurant and people looked at it disbelieving at first,'' she said Thursday. ''I thought it was going to be a pain but decided to do it to cover my backside.''

Recipes for Christmas pudding -- sometimes known as a plum pudding -- are varied, but generally involve a rich boiled or steamed mixture larded with fruits and spices.

Traditionally silver coins are hidden in the mix so that some portions have them and others don't.
