Gobrecht book new from Heritage

coinsHeritage Auction Galleries and Ivy Press announced Dec. 1 the release of the 136-page book Gobrecht Dollars. It is the most thorough review to date of the existing scholarship on these controversial and much sought-after coins, according to Heritage.

“This reference book, the result of five and a half years of work, is intended for the general numismatist that is looking for a deeper understanding of these fascinating coins,” said Mark Van Winkle, editor of the tome and chief cataloger at Heritage. “It gathers together the diverse threads of the Gobrecht story without delving into the more speculative areas of die markers and their possible consequence for establishing emission sequences.”

The overriding question of emission sequences is an area that is, and has been, under investigation for some time and, it is reasoned, will eventually lead to a generally accepted striking order.

Risky Pudding: UK Diners Sign Waiver for Dessert

news

A London restaurant has asked diners to sign away their right to sue before consuming Christmas pudding, a traditional Yuletide treat that sometimes contains coins or charms.

Neleen Strauss, the owner of High Timber in central London, acknowledged that the idea was a bit silly but she said she would rather be safe than sorry.

''It has created a bit of a stir in the restaurant and people looked at it disbelieving at first,'' she said Thursday. ''I thought it was going to be a pain but decided to do it to cover my backside.''

Recipes for Christmas pudding -- sometimes known as a plum pudding -- are varied, but generally involve a rich boiled or steamed mixture larded with fruits and spices.

Traditionally silver coins are hidden in the mix so that some portions have them and others don't.

Gold coin enriches Jax Salvation Army effort

coinsThe “plunk” was as ordinary as the thousands of other sounds made by coins being dropped into the trademark red kettles.

What those counting the generous donations made Tuesday to The Salvation Army in Jacksonville found something anything but ordinary.

There, amid the dimes, quarters and dollar bills, was a folded piece of paper with the inscription: “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”

Former Marine turns coins into business

coins .

Jeff Morin, a former seargant in the Marine Corps, founded his customized coin business in 2002 with a $500 loan from his mom.

This year Stafford-based Coins for Anything Inc. debuted at No. 1,518 on the Inc. 5000, a list of the 5,000 fastest-growing private companies in the U.S., for 210 percent revenue growth between 2005 and 2008. The company reported $2.8 million in revenue in 2008 and is on track to make about the same this year.

The business idea bloomed when Morin started selling Challenge coins, typically military medallions with an organization’s emblem, on eBay for extra cash.

A mother e-mailed him asking for a Marine mom-designed coin, and after finding no coins like that on the market, Morin designed and ordered 100 ‘Mother of Marine” coins that sold out within hours. His own mom, who helped mail the individual coins, gave him a $500 loan to start the business.

History of the $20 United States gold coin, 1849th1933

coinsThe $20 gold coin shown here is the only known specimen of its kind and is among the rarest of U.S. coins. It owes its existence, in part, to the discovery of gold in California in 1848, of which the famous Sutter’s Mill discovery was but the beginning. The California Gold Rush created a steady flow of gold, part of which reached the United States Mint in Philadelphia. Instead of striking gold in traditional $10 pieces, the Mint decided to issue larger denominations. In February 1849, Congress authorized the striking of $20 gold coins, which were created by Chief Engraver James Barton Longacre. This coin is one of two trial patterns struck on March 12, 1850, even though it bears the date 1849. The second pattern has never been found. This coin inaugurated the series of gold $20 coins nicknamed ‚Äúdouble eagles,‚Äù which were issued from 1850 to 1907. The term ‚Äúdouble eagle‚Äù is derived from the fact that the $10 coin is called an ‚ “eagle.”

Orange County man arrested for defrauding elderly couple of $5 million

coins

According to the indictment, Walthall convinced the couple to invest in a partnership called "Advanced Recycling General Partners" which was supposed to search for and extract gold from old mines in the Imperial Valley, Nevada, and Brazil.

Walthall told the couple that he had invested over $3 million of his own money over the past decade researching the gold extraction process and that, as partners, the couple would receive a salary and that expenses would be approved beforehand by each partner.

According to the Los Angeles bureau of the FBI, the majority of the money was used by Waltham for his own gold investments and personal expenses, including alimony and child support for his four children and purchasing multiple vehicles and other luxury items. This includes a hyperbaric oxygen chamber worth approximately $60,000 and a $10,000 payment to a film school.

Gold Coins, Medals, Ingots Sell Well in India

coinsPerhaps the word “consumption” means something regarding food to most of us, but India is currently the world leader regarding the consumption or demand for gold. With gold being valued at more than $1,000 per troy ounce at the time this article is being written this has become big business in India, with many medals being rather loosely sold described as being coins.

While in the United States such advertising would draw protests, in India the line remains blurred, especially since tastes in gold purchases in India are changing. Delhi bullion dealer Aditya Sinha was recently quoted by the NDTV Profit India Business News Channel as saying, “The customer preference of gold buyers in India is changing fast. All these years buying gold jewelry items were considered the best investment option. But these days people are shifting from buying gold jewelry to gold coins.”

Woman leaves $40K of valuable coins at shrine

coinsPeople often visit the National Shrine Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes in Emmitsburg seeking spiritual healing.

Worshippers pray and light candles at the statue of the Virgin Mary to help along an answer to difficult questions, Grotto director William Tronolone said.

Sometimes they leave gifts.

But even Tronolone said he was surprised when a staff member discovered rare and valuable coins valued at about $40,000 in plastic bags Nov. 9. They had been concealed under a pile of leaves near the shrine's grotto.

Gold Sets Tone for Strong Week

coinsGold bullion went through the $1,100 barrier like a warm knife through butter. It is trading firmly in the mid teens after briefly crossing the $1,120 mark. Ho hum, another record price. Silver and platinum have followed along, but in a somewhat lackluster fashion. There is some reasonable belief that when silver came down from the $21 level a year ago March that many bought in the $17 to 18 level and are happy to get out even whenever the metal trades there. Once these weak holders are taken out, many believe silver will jump ahead.

How is this affecting coins? Proof gold Eagles are nearing the $2,000 per ounce range at retail and the silver version in the $55+ area.

Gold to hit $1,300 per ounce in December

gold-coinsDuring last week, gold hit a new historical high of $1122 per ounce even though there was not much in the way of any new data. The week before last, the Reserve Bank of India purchased 200 tons from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and Barrick, the world’s largest gold mining company, unwound some of its large hedged position in gold. December crude oil moved sharply lower due mainly to the larger-than-expected increase in weekly crude oil inventories which increased by 1.76 million barrels compared to market expectations of 1.0 million barrels. Also, gasoline inventories had an unexpected increase in weekly inventories.

Last week there were no massive moves in the EUR/USD, and economic data in the Eurozone seems to be more encouraging than that in the US and the UK. The assertion made by the president of the ECB that there's no reason to extend extraordinary measures into next year signaled the ECB may withdraw expansionary policies earlier than the FED.
