Local veterans reflect on their service
Combat medals, badges and bronze stars stand at
attention surrounding 87-year-old Maj. Gen. John Raaen's living room; tokens of
distant memories brought vividly back to life and gleaming along the painted
walls.
His is no lone archive of war here in the Mayflower Retirement Community.
There are rooms like Raaen's just down the hall, around the corner or up a
stairway, beckoning tales of heroes just waiting for visitors to take an
air-conditioned stroll down memory lane.
Raaen is among the many retired military personnel living at the Mayflower
Retirement Community turning a wistful eye toward the life they once knew and
the friends, comrades and family they honor this Memorial Day.

significance. Religious medals characterize the symbols and practices which
reflect the belief of a particular religion. Religious medals are common in
polytheistic beliefs like Hinduism. Catholics also give special importance to
religious medals. The medals are also prevalent in other religious societies
such as Buddhism. Religious medals are adopted from the ritual practices of
tribes. The use of religious medals
resembles the practice of using amulets to defend the evil practices. Some
members of the society impart sacredness to these religious medals where as
some others consider it only as a souvenir or a commemorative piece. Religious

Tell me: what does the word ‘coins’ conjure
up in your mind’s eye? Is it neat velour covered boxes with a multitude of
shiny coins sitting neatly in slots and covered in perspex, or coins
hidden
below ground centuries ago to safeguard one's wealth from wayside robbers and
vagabonds?
And ‘medals’? Do you see long rows of
brightly colored gongs and ribbon with some long dead soldier’s name carved on
the side, or Cruft’s Championship Tokens, ‘Blue Peter’ giveaways, some Boy
Scout's best attempt at tying reef knots or thousands more alongside?
And what of tokens? Love tokens? Bus tokens?
