From Thaler to Dollar

dollar

The "Dollar" originated in the city of Joachimsthal in Bavaria (now Germany). Beginning in 1518, silver from the mines near Joachimsthal was minted into silver "thalers", with a standardized weight of 29.2 grams. ("Thal" means "valley" in German.)

Eventually, governments throughout Europe adopted this standardized coin for commerce. The silver came from many locations, and many different governments produced the coins, but they were all basically identical. Europe was on a "Dollar standard"...

Japan Mint to issue memorial coin in honor of samurai Ryoma Sakamoto

coinsThe Japan Mint has announced it will issue a memorial silver coin embossed with an image of legendary 19th-century samurai Ryoma Sakamoto.

The new 1,000-yen coin is themed on Kochi Prefecture, the birthplace of Sakamoto, a samurai who led the movement to overthrow the Tokugawa Shogunate and made a great contribution to the modernization of Japan. He has been featured in many films and TV dramas, including NHK's ongoing period drama "Ryomaden."

The United States Mint Thursday released its 13th presidential dollar coin, honoring Millard

Fillmore, at a ceremony in the Moravia Junior Senior School cafeteria, which was not large enough to accommodate the crowd of community members who had come to celebrate a president whose national legacy is not legendary, but whose roots are their roots.

First minted in 1878 following the passage of the Bland-Alison Act, the new dollar was named after its designer, George T. Morgan. Political pressure by powerful silver mining companies, in a gambit to stabilize the price of their commodity at artificially high levels, created the impetus driving the legislative action.

Hallaton Roman coin is 'oldest found in Britain'

The coin, which has been dated to 221BC, was found near Hallaton in Leicestershire with 5,000 other coins, a helmet and decorated bowl.

Uncovered by archaeologists in 2000, the coin's significance has just been recognised, the county council said.

It said the coin, which has the Goddess Roma on one side, was "something very special".

The other side depicts mythical twins Castor and Pollux sat on galloping horses.

Bleached counterfeit bills make their way to ER

paperEast Rutherford Deputy Chief Edward Bury recently reported confiscating counterfeit bills that have been circulating around the borough, specifically bleached-out $5 bills that have been reprinted as $100 bills.

This technique of counterfeiting is more high-tech than printing the money at home on an ink jet printer, according to U.S. Secret Service Special Agent in Charge Cindy Wofford. Because of the sophistication of the bills, the bleaching method usually means a more organized group is involved.

“Anytime they are bleaching fives and counterfeiting on top, it creates a better quality because the paper is real,” Wofford said. “It allows counterfeit pens to react like an actual bill due to the paper. … It appears real to the retailer and is a little easier to pass.”

The East Rutherford Police Department usually receives four or five counterfeit bills a month, mainly from BJ’s Wholesale Store at 300 Route 17 North, officials said.

Investors who paid US$850 ($1174) an ounce back then earned 44 per cent as gold reached a year high of $1226.56 on December 3 in London.

The Standard & Poor's 500 stock index produced a 22-fold return with dividends reinvested, Treasuries rose 11-fold and cash in the average US cheque account rose at least 92 per cent. On an inflation-adjusted basis, gold investors are still 79 per cent away from getting their money back.
