Dahlonega_Museum_CoinsA warning has come from Lumpkin County Sheriff's Office regarding a potential conspiracy to steal coins that belong to the Dahlonega Gold Museum.

It is worth mentioning that on Christmas Eve there was an anonymous call that warned the museum about a potential conspiracy. Museum's officials contacted one of the supposed co-conspirators, who lately paid a visit to the museum to pick the information regarding the value of the coins.

"We put them on notice that we knew about the conspiracy and none of the coins would be stolen," stated Mark McClure, Lumpkin County Sheriff. "We would be definitely looking to charge individuals if that did occur," he added.

The person, who is supposed to be one of the conspirators, living out of state, denied any connections with the plan of stealing the coins.

According to the Sheriff, residential robberies of coins and coin collections are quite a usual thing within the community, however coins from the Dahlonega Gold Museum represent a real rarity.

"We take these treasures of our county very seriously because they are very valuable. But they’re also of great historical significance to the citizens of Lumpkin County," mentioned Sheriff McClure.

Although the museum's officials contacted both the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the office of sheriff filed no charges due to the fact that there has been no evidence regarding the conspiracy that took part in the state.

The information on the conspiracy was also provided to the Numismatic Crime Information Center, which represents a database for international investigations on coin and artifact stealing.

For the record it is worth noting that early last year, in Florida, coins valued at $4 million were stolen from coin dealers, however no connection between this theft and the conspiracy have been found.
