Nintendo Holiday-Quarter Results Beat Forecasts

nintendoNintendo Co. said year-end holiday sales were "robust," suggesting that its Wii game console had regained its footing after a slowdown in demand, though a strong yen and price cuts continued to push down the company's profits.

Nintendo said group net income was 192.60 billion yen ($2.14 billion) for the nine months ended Dec. 31, down 9% from a profit of 212.52 billion yen for April-December of the previous year. Revenue fell 23% to 1.182 trillion yen, while operating profit fell 41% to 296.66 billion yen.

To cope with slowing demand for the Wii, Nintendo cut prices by 20% to $200 ahead of the holiday shopping season. Revenue also suffered from a strengthening of the yen against the euro and U.S. dollar, resulting in lower overseas income when converted into yen terms.

Apple could announce end of AT&T iPhone exclusivity Wed.

technologyThe report does not go as far as to claim what other U.S. carriers could offer the iPhone. But a source allegedly told the Web site that AT&T is "tired of taking the heat" for poor reception from iPhone users. In short, the report claims, AT&T officials believe the iPhone is hurting the company's image, and they are no longer interested in having exclusive access to Apple's handset.

"Inside of AT&T, we are hearing that the iPhone is causing more trouble than ever before," the report said. "On some level, having the iPhone is hurting AT&T's image. Because they are the only company to carry it, and it's such a data hog, it's largely to blame for AT&T's network troubles. We don't remember hearing about AT&T's 'horrible network' before the iPhone--do you?"

HotHardware alleges, without any evidence to support the claim, that the iPhone doesn't handle the switch from 3G to EDGE connections well, and frequently drops calls when 3G access is lost.

Microsoft's Zune Phone in April?

technologyWith the Mobile World Congress fast approaching, the rumor mills have started to work overtime with some of them sounding outright preposterous and contradictory to earlier reports. This particular rumor we are about to talk of is one such thing.

Most people here might be aware of Microsoft's Zune Phone (also known as the "Pink" phone). While most of us thought it was what it was - just a rumor and forgot about it, here comes yet another wave of rumor that seems to indicate that a Zune Phone might actually be on the cards - and that too in the next few months. If that wasn't enough, it would run Windows Mobile 7, the rumor states!

Google could find new road in China

technologyThe company's surprise statement on Tuesday that it was no longer ready to censor search results in China and might pull out of the world's biggest Internet market by users has put it squarely at odds with the Chinese government.

But analysts and business experts on Wednesday said Google's past clashes with powerful companies and industries, and the importance of the Chinese market to Google's future, suggest that self-imposed exile from China may not be Google's end-game.

Hard lines in previous battles have been negotiating tactics and could be this time, too, they said.

"I'm sure they will be pragmatic, Google is a very dynamic company," said Christopher Tang, a professor at the UCLA Anderson School of Management. "I doubt they will walk away like that.

NASA Launches WISE in Space

NasaNASA launched a new infrared space telescope—WISE (Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer) from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

A Delta II rocket carried WISE into the polar orbit that is 326 miles above Earth at 6:09 a.m. PST.

Through WISE, NASA is hoping to get detailed information regarding hundreds of millions of unseen and far away objects in space besides comets and asteroids.

According to the mission’s project manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, William Irace, ""WISE thundered overhead, lighting up the pre-dawn skies. All systems are looking good, and we are on our way to seeing the entire sky better than ever before."

YouTube's Auto Caps Not Only Help The Deaf, But Searchers Too

technologyIn a move that will make hundreds of thousands more videos accessible to the deaf and hearing impaired, Google Thursday announced that videos on its YouTube site would sport machine-generated automatic captions.

Google has offered user-generated captioned videos for three years. What makes "auto-caps" different is that Google will now use the speech-recognition algorithms employed in Google Voice to automatically generate captions for all videos.

According to Google's blog, 20 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute. The goal for auto-caps is to quickly get more videos captioned. Not only will the captions help the deaf and hearing-impaired help understand videos, but they will also assist people around the world to access video content, improve search and let viewers pinpoint exact sections of videos.

Microsoft warns of Windows 7 security hole

technologyMicrosoft has confirmed reports of a security flaw in its Windows operating system that hackers could use to temporarily destabilize Windows 7 PCs. The software giant also acknowledged that blueprints for exploiting the flaw are now available online.

At issue is a so-called "denial-of-service" vulnerability in the component of Windows that handles the sharing of files and folders. Microsoft said attackers could use exploit code now publicly available to cause vulnerable systems to stop functioning or become unreliable. The flaw is present in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, and does not exist in older versions of the operating system, the software giant said.
