Production shifts to H1N1 from seasonal

healthH1N1 flu may be the most talked about bug, but the old-fashioned seasonal flu -- which kills more than 33,000 Americans annually -- is still a threat, and vaccines for the seasonal flu are running low in some places in metro Detroit.

Oakland County health officials said that they exhausted their supply of seasonal flu vaccine Thursday.

By late Thursday afternoon, Macomb County had about 4,400 vaccines left out of 17,000 ordered, said Tom Kalkofen, director of the county health department. Wayne County was down to a couple hundred doses, though officials there have administered most of their yearly allotment.

"Production has shifted to the H1N1 vaccine," said George Miller, director of Health and Human Services for Oakland County. "We were prepared to do both, and it's unfortunate the feds weren't."

Anxiety over H1N1 on the rise

healtAnxiety over a potential H1N1 epidemic is rising, as a majority of Americans believe the virus is a serious health hazard, according to a new survey.

About 58 percent of Americans think that the swine flu poses a serious threat to their health, according to the survey from Burlington, Mass.-based Silverlink Communications Inc., a health care communications firm. The results mark an increase compared to May 2009, when about 47 percent of Americans considered the swine flu to be a serious health threat.

37% of U.S. Teen Girls Got HPV Vaccine

healtMore than one in three U.S. teen girls has had at least one shot of Gardasil, a CDC survey shows, but only 18% of girls got the three shots needed for protection.

The survey includes girls vaccinated through 2008, two years after Gardasil's approval. A second HPV vaccine, GlaxoSmithKline's Cervarix, is expected to be approved this year.

Gardasil, from Merck, protects against the four strains of the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus (HPV) that cause most cases of cervical cancer and genital warts. But other HPV strains also cause these diseases, so even vaccinated women still need regular Pap exams.

West Nile virus in Brookline

healtThe West Nile virus was found in mosquitoes from two locations in Brookline this week, according to the Massachusetts Department of Health, bringing the tally of communities with confirmed cases to 18.

The wet weather in early summer, followed by hot weather in August, resulted in more mosquitoes than usual, said Jennifer Manley, spokeswoman for the state Department of Public Health. While last year’s West Nile counts were higher - disease-carrying mosquitoes were identified in 59 municipalities and 11 counties - people can be bitten for several more weeks before chilly weather kills the bugs.

“People need to remember insect repellant, especially dusk to dawn,’’ said Manley. She also advised residents to dump all standing water in garbage can lids, potted plants, and other containers to reduce breeding areas.

Magazines Show Babies Sleeping Unsafely

healthMany magazine photos show babies sleeping in unsafe positions, according to researchers at Children's National Medical Center.

Sudden infant death syndrome researcher Dr. Rachel Moon analyzed pictures of sleeping babies in 24 magazines that are widely read by 20- to 40-year-old women.

More than one-third of the photos had problems, according to a news release on the work.

The authors of the study looked at whether the baby was on its side or stomach, positions recommended over placing a baby on its back. They also looked for hazards such as soft bedding.

Mutation Tied to Need for Less Sleep Is Discovered

healtResearchers have found a genetic mutation in two people who need far less sleep than average, a discovery that might open the door to understanding human sleep patterns and lead to treatments for insomnia and other sleep disorders.

The finding, published in the Friday issue of the journal Science, marks the first time scientists have identified a genetic mutation that relates to sleep duration in any animal or human.

Although the mutation has been identified in only two people, the power of the research stems from the fact that the shortened sleep effect was replicated in mouse and fruit-fly studies. As a result, the research now gives scientists a clearer sense of where to look for genetic traits linked to sleep patterns.

Chinese Town Sealed Off After Plague Deaths

plague-afpOfficials have sealed off an isolated town of 10,000 people in rural west-central China after an outbreak of pneumonic plague killed two residents, the state-run Xinhua news service reported on Monday.

An official who answered the emergency line at Renmin Hospital in Ziketan, where the outbreak is centered, said that all roads into and out of the area had been closed off, but that residents remained free to move about within the town. The official, who refused to give his name, said it was unclear when the blockade would be lifted. Repeated calls to a plague emergency phone line produced only busy signals.

How To Get Ready Mentally To Stop Smoking

scissors_cutting_up_cigsBefore you can stop-smoking, you need to mentally prepare yourself. Many people who try to stop-smoking fail because they have not been mentally prepared for the challenge that lies ahead.

Cigarette smoking is one of the most addictive substances there are. It does nothing to add to your life. It had a foul odor, stinks up the house and your clothes, yellows your teeth and causes wrinkles around your mouth.

On top of that, it is very unhealthy. It weakens your immune system and leads to diseases such as cancer. It is one of the leading causes of heart disease, diseases of the circulatory system and lung cancer. Clearly, there is no good reason to smoke. There are, however, many good reasons to stop-smoking.

More People Live With Paralysis

healthA new study shows 40 percent more Americans live with paralysis and five times more people are living with a spinal-cord injury.

The survey released Tuesday, involving over 33,000 households, showed that 1.275 million people have had a spinal cord injury and over 5.6 million Americans live with some form of paralysis. The highest previous estimates were 250,000 and roughly four million, respectively.

The study was initiated by the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation and conducted by the University of New Mexico's Center for Development and Disability. More than 30 experts from 14 leading universities and medical centers and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention set the parameters for the survey. The development of the survey, acquisition and analysis of the data took over three years.

Is Scuba Dive Helpful For Treasure Hunting?

scuba-dive

Every scuba diver dreams of Treasure Hunting maybe it is because it has been estimated that the literally billions of dollars that have been found and pulled up from below the waves, represent only about 2 percent of what lies below.

And the treasures beneath the surface are not only the obvious ones of gold and silver. The sea holds a trove of historical artifacts that are also treasure if only for their historical value.

Scuba dive for treasure hunting

There is not a specific scuba dive certification labeled “Treasure Diver” but if you are going to do any serious treasure hunting, wreck diver and or cave or cavern diver certification would be strongly recommended.

Since the wrecks that hold the most promising possibilities of sunken riches are also likely in deep waters some type of training in extended and deep-water scuba dive is also recommended such as Enriched Air Diving or Rebreather Diving.

It is possible however for even average recreational scuba dive of modest ability to search for undersea treasure, without ever having to enter a wreck or a cavern.
