carbon_dioxide_emissionsCalifornia governor Arnold Schwarzenegger mentioned that he is going to sue the government of the United States because it does not grant a waiver that would permit California to enforce its own standards on emissions coming from motor vehicles.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is the one to grant the waiver and California needs it for setting a state law asking the companies that create cars to lower the level of carbon dioxide emissions by 25% on autos that are to be launched in 2009.

Other 16 states whether have already adopted or are considering applying the same standards as the orange county.

"I am extremely disappointed by EPA's decision to block the will of millions of people in California and 16 other states who want us to take tough action against global warming," outlined in a statement Schwarzenegger. "I have no doubt that we will prevail because the law, science, and the public's demand for leadership are on our side," he added.

It is worth mentioning that on Wednesday the Bush administration declared that the EPA is not going to grant the waiver. This is due to the fact that an energy bill has been signed hours earlier. The bill makes unnecessary any further action regarding the emissions of carbon dioxide from vehicles.

Officials of the Environmental Protection Agency stated that the national law, which increases the standards on automobile fuel emissions by 40% by 2020, was, in fact, a "better approach" than the so-called "patchwork" of state rules.
