Counterfeit Coin Holders – Consumer Alert!
Officials from the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) stated
that counterfeit replica coin holders appeared on the market.
The roots of corporation's foundation date back to 1987, when the company was created with the goal of granting third party grades to coins. When coins arrive to NGC, the company then analyzes, grades, databases and afterwards it encapsulates the numismatic items in holders that are tamper resistant as well as protective.
Among several companies that provide coin grading services, NGC is one of the leaders together with PCGS.
It is worth mentioning that fake certified coin holders doesn't represent something new. The persons dealing with their production risk to be jailed. They, however, also hope that the buyer will pay a huge sum of money for a counterfeit coin or a coin that doesn't have the same date as indicated on the holder.
The announcement of the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation states:
- The coin holder label is a copy of an actual NGC certified label, with matching information of an entry in their database;
- Trade Dollars and Bust Dollars are the coins most often counterfeited within the discovered fake holders, along with some Flowing Hair Dollars and foreign coins.
In order to spot the counterfeit holder it is important that coin collectors pay a visit to the NGC information page that provides great comparison in photos. Using the pictures on the site it is easy to depict the features of the counterfeit.
NGC also states:
"The next generation NGC holder to be released in 2008 has incorporated many new anti-counterfeiting features. Counterfeiting is a regrettable component of the collectibles hobby that affects not only certification companies but plagues world mints and currency printing bureaus. NGC will aggressively pursue all available legal remedy. Furthermore, NGC is wholly committed to investing in technologies and fraud prevention methods to continue to offer the safest and most reliable product in the rare coin marketplace."
